Mining and Geology Day

COUNCILMEMBER CATE TO KICKOFF 7TH ANNUAL MINING AND GEOLOGY DAY
Local Quarry to Offer Hundreds of Boy Scouts Unique Behind-the-Scenes Experience
San Diego, CA: As part of the Boy Scouts of San Diego-Imperial Council's 100th Anniversary celebration, hundreds of Boy Scouts will participate in Mining and Geology Day at the Vulcan Materials Company quarry in Mira Mesa where they will learn first-hand about rocks and minerals, get up close to heavy earth-moving equipment, and gain a greater appreciation for the important role that mining plays in today's world.

Among other things, Scouts will caravan around the quarry in special trolley cars and learn how rocks are extracted, crushed, and processed to create a variety of building materials such as asphalt and ready-mix concrete. Through a variety of stations, Scouts will also learn about the importance of Geology and how to identify rocks and minerals.

“I am honored to welcome Boy Scouts and their families from near and far to District 6. By participating in Mining and Geology Day, Scouts can earn Merit Badges in Mining in Society and in Geology, and leave with a better understanding of geology,” stated Councilmember Chris Cate.
